Water Leak Repair
If the meter keeps moving with every fixture off, water is escaping somewhere unseen, so close the main and call before it works into framing or under the footing.
When this becomes an emergency
- A damp stripe on a basement wall that follows the line of a pipe overhead.
- The meter dial creeping with the whole house shut down.
- Ground that stays soft along the run between the road and the house through a dry spell.
- A musty smell in a closet that shares a wall with a bathroom.
What a pro does
A plumber narrows the ground before searching it. Closing the valve where the service enters the house and then watching the meter settles the biggest question there is: still moving means the loss is out in the yard, stopping means it's inside the building. Inside is comparatively kind here, because a basement or a crawlspace lets a plumber get eyes and hands on most of the supply run without opening a wall. Outside is harder, and the local ground is why. Water escaping into fill over limestone can travel along a rock seam and surface a long way from the break, or find a fissure and never surface at all, which is why a wet spot in the grass is treated as a hint rather than as an answer. Acoustic locating and line tracing decide the dig. Older service lines through the mill neighbourhoods are frequently galvanised steel, and a plumber who finds one pinhole in a corroded run will say plainly that the rest of the line is the same age as the failure.
