Clogged Drain
When the lowest drain in the house starts taking water back instead of away, the main is involved and further flushing only adds to what has to surface.
When this becomes an emergency
- A basement floor drain giving off a smell it never used to.
- Bath water backing up into a tub on the lowest floor while an upstairs sink drains fine.
- A kitchen line that needs clearing again a month after the last time.
- Bubbles rising in a toilet bowl when the washing machine empties.
What a pro does
Depth in the building tells the plumber almost everything before a tool comes out. In two-storey mill housing around Rossville or Red Bank, a single slow fixture upstairs is a branch problem, while anything showing up at a basement floor drain means the house is backing up at its lowest point and the trouble sits in the main. Cast iron stacks are still in service in a lot of these homes, and cast iron doesn't fail cleanly; it scales inward until an opening the width of a fist is the width of a thumb, and then ordinary use starts catching. A cable restores flow. What comes after matters more: a camera run on any line that has now backed up twice, since a repeat in the same spot points at the pipe's condition rather than at anything anybody put down it. On the Georgia side, ranch houses over crawlspaces have shallower runs and their own habit of holding grease in the long horizontal stretch out to the yard.
